Timelines are an ideal format for displaying a series of events in chronological order in a very visual way, such as steps and stages that make up a process.

With an interactive timeline, your audience can delve into the content and interact with the information that interests them most, freely and without having to stick to a specific order.

Creating a timeline in Genially is very simple. First you choose a template, then edit its resources, and then add the information you want to each of the events or milestones.

We’ll explain the process step by step:

Choose the template

Explore the different templates you can use as a base when creating your timeline. To find them:

1. Go to your main Panel and click on Create genially.

2. In the search bar, enter keywords such as ‘line’, ‘timeline’, etc.

3. Choose the template you like best.

For this tutorial we’ve chosen this template.

TIP: You can also upload your own timeline in image format (JPG, PNG) using the Image section of the Editor.

Edit the template’s resources

Once you’ve got the template open in the Editor, you can start personalizing it and editing the different parts so that it reflects the information you want to communicate.

1. Text

You can use and edit the text boxes included in the template. You can also add other text boxes, move them, or delete them. Check out this tutorial to learn how to personalize your text boxes.

2. Components and design of the timeline

Each template has its own design and elements, but you can modify them so that they represent the topic of your timeline. You can also:

  • Replace: if you want to use another element or resource, click on the element and then on the Replace that appears above it on the right.

  • Change the color of an element: click on it and you’ll be able to change its color from the toolbar at the top of the Editor.

3. Apply interactivity

Now that you’ve personalized the components and interactive elements of your timeline, it’s time to add the interactivity. You can add all kinds of content that you want to show up when your audience interacts with the elements: images, texts, videos, audios, GIFs, etc.

You can add audio to an element or resource so that it plays when you click on it. You can also make it so that some images and resources can be expanded to full-screen size when viewing your genially.

You can also take your audience to another page of your creation or to an external website. Discover all the types of interactivity that exist and how to use them in this tutorial.

4. Add animation

To capture your audience’s attention, add animation to the elements in your interactive timeline.

Select the elements and click on the Animation icon that appears above it. You can then choose and set up the animations using the menu that appears on the right.

You can also delete an existing animation effect from an element. Check out this tutorial to learn more about animation effects.

Share your creation

First, publish your creation and then share the link with your audience so that everyone can enjoy your genially.

You can also insert your creation in a website or blog.
